Kyodo Dojo is more than a martial arts school, It is a shared path. We are a community built on trust, respect and a common goal; to become better versions of ourselves, both on and off the floor. Every class, every bow, every lesson is part of a larger journey. One that we walk together.
Kyodo Dojo was founded by Sensei Andrew Duffey and Sensei Catherine Behun. Together, they bring a dynamic blend of tradition, experience and mentorship to the Dojo. Kyodo Dojo was founded by Sensei Andrew Duffey and Sensei Catherine Behun. Together, they bring a dynamic blend of tradition, experience and mentorship to the Dojo. Sensei Andrew a Sandan (3rd dan) in Goju-Ryu Karate, has devoted decades to the martial arts and is known for his structured, principled approach to teaching. He believes in empowering students through discipline, clarity and deep personal reflection. Sensei Catherine or Sensei B, a Nidan (2nd dan) in Goju-Ryu Karate, is a compassionate and insightful instructor whose intuitive understanding of technique and thoughtful leadership help guide the spirit of the Dojo.
We are proud to be rooted in the traditions of Japanese Goju-Ryu while embracing a supportive, modern approach to learning and personal growth.
Our philosophy is deeply rooted in traditional martial arts values but adapted for the realities of modern life. We believe the strength of a student comes not just from their technique but from their character and that true power lies in restraint, purpose and compassion.
At Kyodo Dojo, we believe martial arts should be as much about shaping character as building skills. Our youth programs are designed to support each age groups developmental needs while teaching focus, respect, confidence and discipline in a positive, structured environment.

Dragonflies (3-5)
Our youngest students are introduced to basic movement, balance, coordination and listening skills though games, drills and simple martial arts techniques. At this stage, classes are short, high-energy and focused on building comfort and joy in the Dojo.
Grasshoppers (5-8)
This group builds on foundational movement while introducing kihon (basics) light kata and Dojo etiquette. Classes remain playful and active but students are now expected to listen longer, begin understanding structure and work with partners respectfully.
Kids (8-12)
This program transitions students into a martial arts structure. They learn full kihon (basics) combinations, full kata forms, bunkai (application) and sparring principles. Leadership, goal-setting and effort are emphasized alongside physical growth. Our children's classes are built to be encouraging but challenging, firm in discipline, fun in delivery and always grounded in the core values of the Dojo: Honor, Integrity, Loyalty and Time.
Youth (Ages 12–15)
The Youth Program supports students through the important transition from childhood to young adulthood by developing advanced physical skills, technical precision, discipline, and leadership. Training emphasizes stronger kihon (basics) , deeper understanding of kata and bunkai (application), increased responsibility, and character growth, while providing a positive outlet for stress and social pressures. Youth students are encouraged to become role models within the dojo and may assist in beginner classes, helping build confidence, accountability, and teaching skills as they prepare for the expectations of the Teen & Adult Program.
Teen and Adult (16+)
The Teen & Adult Program focuses on advanced technical development, physical conditioning, and personal growth through disciplined training rooted in traditional Japanese Goju-Ryu Karate principles and lineage. Students refine kihon (basics) , kata, and bunkai (application) while building strength, endurance, and mental resilience in a supportive but challenging environment. Emphasis is placed on responsibility, respect, perseverance, and leadership, allowing students to progress at their own pace while pursuing individual goals such as self-defense, fitness, competition, or traditional martial arts mastery. This program fosters confidence, stress relief, and a lifelong connection to training, heritage, and community.
